Well hey there!
This post is a little close to the beginning of NaNoWriMo, but I wanted to write it anyway.
If you’re a writer, sitting on the fence between fully committing to NaNoWriMo 2021 (National Novel Writing Month, where you attempt to write a 50,000+ word story in the month of November) I would love to encourage you to dive right in! There are many benefits to a challenge like this! It can teach you consistency, letting go of perfectionism, and many other things. However, to sum these up, I wanted to share 3 reasons you should try NaNoWriMo!
And before you start to ask “Caleb, why in the world do you have the validation to write this blog post?”, yes, I am an official NaNoWriMo winner myself! I attempted NaNoWriMo last year for the first time, and it was a BLAST!! I’m not doing it this year, because I am working very hard on the Author Conservatory right now. But that’s beside the point!
Without further ado, here are a few reasons as to why you, my dear writer, should compete in NaNoWriMo!
1: It Breaks Your Comfort Zone!
Most people (very much including myself) have a strong desire to remain, and never leave, their comfort zone. Why leave the bubble you love to stay in when everything outside of it looks uncomfortable, unnecessary, or just plain frightening?
Well, to put it as bluntly as possible, you will never grow if you don’t leave your comfort zone. Growth is altering, changing, and adapting your way of thinking or life. If you never leave your comfort zone, you will remain with nothing but things you all ready know. And what’s the fun in that?
Yes, it may be uncomfortable. Yes, it may be hard. But if you take that one step outside your comfort zone, push through the pain, and improve, your bubble will grow around that new step. If you take another step, your bubble will grow even larger. The thing that you were so afraid of will soon become part of your comfort zone, and it won’t be scary anymore!
So, to bring this back to NaNo, this could be your one step out of your zone to grow and improve as a writer! Maybe you’ve never tried to write something so fast or long in your life. Maybe you’re a little scared to take the challenge because you’re afraid you won’t make it to the end!
Well, you’ll never know if you don’t try. So take that step! Commit to NaNo, and start working on it one day at a a time. I believe in you. 🙂
2: It Draws a Community Together
Many writers believe that writing is a 100% solitary hobby/career, where you get to sit in a dark room hunched over a notepad or computer and write for hours on end with complete silence and no people ever involved!
That’s true for part of the writing journey, but certainly not all of it! To grow as a writer you’re going to need people around you, reading your writing, giving their feedback and encouragement, and, one day, allowing readers to see your work.
NaNoWriMo is a fun, safe way to begin that journey of sharing your writing with others and meeting fellow writers! On the NaNoWriMo site, you can join “Groups” where you have a little chat space with fellow writers. You can keep each other informed on how far you got on your story each day, and give each other encouragement and motivation!
Not only does NaNo help you find community, but it also draws the entire fiction writer community together. Pretty much every writer knows about this challenge, and many very well-known authors have attempted it at least once! It’s something that a writer on any level can connect with and talk about.
3: Hard Challenge, Great Reward!
This challenge is not a laughing matter. 50,000+ words in 30 days. Roughly 2,000 words needed to be written every single day. It’s a hard task. It will challenge your consistency, your writing skills, and your comfort zone’s limits. However, if you work hard, show up every single day and plunk out those words (even if they’re not the greatest) I believe that you can defeat this challenge!! I did it last year. I know many fellow writers who have completed it. It’s challenging, yes. It’s not impossible.
And, the greatest thing about difficult challenges or tasks, is that it always feels better when you’ve completed it. That feeling of victory, after writing your 50k and seeing that November is not yet over is unreal!!
Hard challenges bring about great and more satisfying rewards.
So now, my dear writer, I have given you three of the many reasons why you should attempt NaNoWriMo. Again, if you’re on the fence, I would definitely encourage you to go for it. It’s loads of fun, it will help you connect with fellow writers, it will challenge you, but the reward at the end is sweet. I think you can do it. Now it’s time for you to believe in yourself. Go forth and write!
