10 of My Favorite Books Ever (Outside My Genre)

Welcome to part 2 of my 10 of My Favorite Books Ever posts! This time we’re going to be talking about 10 of my favorite books OUTSIDE of my genre. (So basically anything besides fantasy).

#1: Adorning the Dark

This. Book. Is. Phenomenal. Written by Andrew Peterson, the author of the Wingfeather Saga, this non-fiction book about everything from writing, music, to art in general, has so many good lessons packed into it! I actually wrote a book review on this book, which you can read here! I would highly recommend it to every Christian Artist out there!

#2: Do Hard Things

This book really changed my life. When I read it, I was pretty young, and I was actually all ready doing a lot of things they talked about to pursue my writing journey and other things. But just the fact of knowing that other people are out there like me, who want to break through a lot of low expectations given to teens, was really inspiring. This is a very very good book!

#3: The Mysterious Benedict Society

This action/adventure mystery series is extremely fun to read! Though it’s a great read for Middle-Grade audiences, the complexity and cleverness of the mysteries and plot is entertaining for all ages!

#4: Treasure Island

Treasure Island is an amazing classic! It’s a riveting tale of classic pirate awesomeness! The fun adventure and battles is so entertaining to read over and over again.

#5: Jedi Apprentice

I haven’t read many Star Wars expanded universe, but the Jedi Apprentice series is really really good!! It shows the apprenticeship of Obi-Wan Kenobi before The Phantom Menace, and his relationship with Qui-Gon. It really shows more of the personality of both of these characters, and even though the books are pretty short and easy to read, the plots, character arcs, and themes are very good and complex!!

#6: Jedi Quest

A follow-up Star Wars series to the Jedi Apprentice series, written by the same author, Jedi Quest is just as, if not more, complex in plots and characters as the previous series! This one follows the apprenticeship of Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan, between The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. It really shows more of Anakin’s character arc and his thoughts, and also continues some unfinished plots from Jedi Apprentice. A great Expanded Universe!

#7: Fawkes

Yes, yes, I knooowww this is a fantasy book! I suppose it could have been added to my last post, but because this is Historical Fiction Fantasy, I decided to add it to this post instead.

I just bought and read this book not to long ago. Over the past couple years or so I’ve heard so much about it. Everyone was raving about how good it was. So finally I bought it and read it. And yeah. It’s good. It’s really good. I know why people rave about it now!

The mix between true historical facts and the made up characters and fantasy is so fascinating, and the deep themes woven into this entertaining novel are so so good! Definitely recommended for everyone to check out!

#8: Aliens in the Gift Shop

Yay! Aliens in the Gift Shop! This hilarious, light-hearted Science Fiction novel is super entertaining to read. It includes a lot of classic Sci-Fi elements, along with some new ones, to create a fresh, fun read.

#9: Call it Courage

Call it Courage is a very short, amazing book. It follows a kid who is scared of water and is made fun of, until he leaves the island he lives on to find his courage. He is stranded on a deserted island–or so he thinks–and must survive on his own until he can make a new boat to get back to his island. It’s such a great read. I just love it.

#10: Where the Mountain Meets the Moon

Like Fawkes, this is technically a fantasy novel, but it has a bunch of Chinese myths and stuff in it that makes it slightly different, so I’m adding it to this post.

This Chinese adventure, with dragons and magical fish, is so cool! I’ve read it many times, and thoroughly enjoyed it each time!
