Novel Snippets: A Silence in the Shadows: Training

Jered and Faal leaped over Crater and slashed their swords. The fighters were streaming with sweat and fighting with all of their might.

Jered and Faal circled Crater.

Crater grinned at them in spite of the situation he was in, and got ready for another attack. The kids circled again and raised their swords offensively. Crater this time leaped at them and they ducked with a quick instinct and swung their swords up.

Crater kicked at Faal and sent him flying through the air, and then crashing into a wall. Crater chuckled at them and raised his sword again. Faal leaped up quickly and reclaimed his weapon, which had clattered a few feet away when he had fallen. He growled at Crater and charged. Jered did the same.

The two of them swung their swords at the same time. Crater dodged the two cuts and kicked at Jered’s hand, sending the sword in it sailing far away. It landed with a loud crash. Faal leaped and attacked with his sword, but Crater used his hand to twist Faal’s arm and send the blade onto the floor. Now the two would use their fists. Crater ducked under a leap and a kick, then grabbed Faal and flung him into Jered. The two boys landed hard. They both got up in a flash.

They surrounded Crater again, and attacked. Belak jumped in. He narrowed his eyes at the boys, and attacked them. They cried out and leaped back, hoping that Belak would not hit them. He successfully struck Faal, sending him crashing into a wall.

Jered ducked under a swing and tackled Belak. Belak grunted as he hit the ground hard. Jered rolled with Belak, the two grappling with each other. Belak jumped out of Jered’s grasp and tried to kick Jered. The boy rolled out of the way and gave Belak a kick in the stomach while he deflected two attacks from Crater, sweat pouring down his head and grunting with effort.

Faal jumped up and leaped onto Crater’s back, momentarily occupying him. Jered leaped over a flying foot and smashed Belak in the chest. He grunted and flew back. Regaining his fighting stance, Belak leaped for Jered.

Jered ducked with a quick roll and sent Belak flying over him, nothing to stop him from crashing into the unyielding ground. Belak collided with the wooden surface and rolled, stunned from the fall.

Belak tried to get up, but Jered kicked him, sending him reeling back to the ground with a gasp and a groan.

Jered checked to see if he was actually alright, and then backed up, positioning quickly into a good fighting stance.

Belak was already getting up for another attack. It was time to move. Jered smiled. He ran over to Crater and grabbed him, throwing him toward Belak. The two of them crashed together, grunting and falling down hard. Jered and Faal smiled and nodded at each other. The two Silents got up grinning. They respectfully bowed to the two young students.

“You guys are doing well!” Crater said.
